Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Belay Hummel, 87, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away on June 11, 2020.

Charlie was born to Charles and Cora Hummel on August 21, 1932 in Newark, NJ. He graduated from Nutley High School, where he was a varsity pole vaulter. He went on to receive a bachelor''s degree in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University. At N.C. State, Charlie was a proud member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

On July 27, 1957 he married Mary Ellen Edge, his college sweetheart, who preceded him in death on February 12, 2005. They were married for 47 years and had three sons, Charles, Paul, and Scott. His beloved sons, Charles E. Hummel and Paul B. Hummel preceded him in death in 2015 and 2003, respectively.

In the midst of Charlie''s studies at N.C. State, he was drafted by the U.S. Army to serve during the Korean War. Charlie was stationed in Italy, where his mechanical ability and engineering background helped him in his role of repairing tanks and half-track vehicles. At the end of his service, he returned to N.C. State to complete his education and afterwards went to work at Hummel Machine and Tool Company in Kearny, NJ alongside his father. Through Charlie''s hard work and dedication, he went on to become the president of Hummel Machine and Tool Company and grew the business. Never losing his passion for engineering and entrepreneurship, Charlie received a U.S. Patent in 2003 for inventing a device used in orthopedic surgery. He was an active member in the Kearny Rotary Club, and served as its president in 1973 and 1974.

In 1975, Charlie and Mary Ellen moved from Fairfield to North Caldwell. They enjoyed summers in Ocean City, NJ. Charlie had spent many summers in Ocean City with his own parents and it was one of the great joys of his life to pass his love of Ocean City on to his children and grandchildren. He passed many happy days aboard his boat, The Merry Wanderer, and spent countless summer evenings on the boardwalk with his grandchildren. In the winter months, Charlie could be found skiing at Vernon Valley with his family. Charlie was a fabulous skier who truly loved the freedom and exhilaration of being on the slopes. He took many ski vacations with his family to Park City, Utah.

Although Charlie never officially retired from Hummel Machine and Tool, he eventually settled in Palm Beach Gardens, FL with his longtime companion Ann Crowther, where they enjoyed the sunshine for many years. His sense of humor and love of life will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving Charlie is his son, Scott Hummel and his wife Lisa; daughter-in-law Melodie Cartwright; cherished grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Jordan, Jeffrey, and Claire; and loving great-grandchildren, Shannon, Mila, Layla, and Wesley Hummel.

Funeral Services will be held privately under the direction of Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, Roseland, NJ, shookfarmer.com.
