Obituary - Donald J. Cooney, March 23, 1932 to June 2, 2018
Donald J. Cooney, 86, of North Caldwell, N.J., previously of Carmel, IN., died peacefully at home on Saturday, June 2, 2018 surrounded by family.
Don''s distinguished career of service to others spanned a wide variety roles and locales. Don was born in South Amboy, N.J. to John and Matilda (Messer) Cooney and grew up in East Orange, N.J. He attended Our Lady of All Souls School in East Orange, Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, and St. Peter''s College in Jersey City before entering Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, N.J. from which he was ordained in 1958. He served for 10 years as a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark.
His career in health care began as an administrator at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. After earning a masters degree in hospital administration, the opportunity to work for the Indiana Department of Mental Health drew him to the midwest and twenty years of service in mental health care administration.
Following retirement he became a certified teacher of students with dyslexia and found great satisfaction in helping children with dyslexia discover the joy of reading. His faith was central to his life and he was an active member of St. Monica''s Church in Indianapolis, IN., and a regular contributor to the parish''s inspirational online reflections. Don led the parish''s RCIA program of religious education for adults converting to Roman Catholicism. In addition Don served many years as a volunteer chaplain''s assistant at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Jane Whelan Cooney and son Sean Andrew of North Caldwell, as well as his daughter Erin Drouillard and husband Peter N Drouillard of San Antonio, TX, and five grandchildren, Benjamin, William, Thomas, Sarah and James Drouillard. Also, his brothers George and wife Joan (Sehulster) Cooney of Royal Oak, MI, and Robert and wife Carolyn (Washburn) Cooney of Caldwell, N.J., and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by his longtime friends the Reverend Emmanuel Nyong, the Reverend Thomas Dente and the Reverend Monsignor Kenneth Herbster at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018 at Notre Dame Church, 359 Central Ave., North Caldwell.
A visitation is planned at the Farmer Funeral Home in Roseland, N.J. for Thursday, June 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. Condolences may be entered in the Farmer guest book at www.farmerfuneral.com.
